Ernest Swallow

Ernest Swallow was born in Felsted during the last quarter of 1895.

Ernest was the son of William and Ellen Swallow, who in 1901 are recorded as living in Coblers Green, Felsted:

By 1911 the census the family had moved to North End:
William Swallow - age 47 - Farm Labourer - born Felstead.
Ellen Swallow - age 48 - born Handon, Suffolk.
Bertie Swallow - age 17 - Horseman on Farm - born Felstead.
Ernest Swallow - age 15 - Blacksmith's Assistant - born Felstead.
Kate Swallow - age 12 - at school - born Felstead.
Edna May Swallow - age 9 - at school - born Felstead.
Sidney Jack Swallow - age 7 - at school - born Great Waltham.

Ernest enlisted at Chelmsford as Private soldier 2510 with the 27th Battalion Royal Fusiliers.

He then served as private soldier 49694 with the 32nd Battalion the Royal Fusiliers.

He died of wounds aged 21 on 26th November 1916. He is remembered on the Menin Gate Memorial, in Ypres. (photograph of memorial courtesy www.britishwargraves.co.uk)

Missing from the War Memorials in Holy Cross Church, Felsted, and at the Memorial Hall, Ernest Swallow is remembered on the Honour Roll in the United Reformed Church, Felsted and on a gravestone in the Cemetery in Chelmsford Road, Felsted. Ernest is also commemorated on the War Memorial at Ford End.
