Hugh E. A. L. J. Stock

Hugh Evan Alexander Leslie Jones Stock was born in Little Sampford in the Saffron Walden Registration District in the Spring of 1899.

In 1901 Hugh and his mother were living with her brother-in-law and sister at 36 Leyton Square Camberwell, London. The census records the household:

Annie Stock married Charles Ridgewell in the final quarter of 1906, in the Dunmow registration district.

By 1911 Annie and Charles are resident at Grand Courts Gate, Rayne, in the parish of Felstead:

Annie Ridgewell - wife - age 39 - born Little Sampford.

In 1911 Hugh was living with his Grandparents, at Little Sampford:

Frederick Sam Stock - son - age 33 - farm Labourer - born Little Sampford.
Frederick Victor Hodgson Stock - grandson - age 16 - Groom - born Little Sampford.
Hugh E A L J Stock - grandson - age 12 - at school - born Little Sampford.

Hugh served as Rifleman 47785 with D company, of the 2nd Battalion the Rifle Brigade (The Prince Consort's Own).

He was killed in action, age 19 on 31st July 1918. He is buried at the Villers Station Cemetery, Villers-au-Bois, in the Pas de Calais.

The Commonwealth War Graves record records him as the son of Charles and Annie Ridgewell of Kirkbrook Cottage, Stebbing Road, Felsted.
